In The Round Sculpture

FOUN110 Design Thinking and Process | Sum 2026 | Prof. Navin Norling

This three-dimensional sculpture project built upon the concepts explored in the previous low bas-relief sculpture exercise, challenging students to transform two-dimensional ideas into fully realized forms in the round. Using only achromatic materials, students expanded their understanding of the elements and principles of design by considering the object from all viewing angles and engaging with space as a design element.

Through an iterative process of sketching, model-making, and experimentation, students investigated form, balance, scale, rhythm, emphasis, and movement in three dimensions. The project encouraged the exploration of positive and negative space, as well as the relationship between mass, volume, and composition. Working with a restricted achromatic palette further emphasized the importance of form, texture, contrast, and spatial organization as primary tools of visual communication.
