Low Bas Relief
FOUN110 Design Thinking and Process | Sum 2026 | Prof. Navin Norling
This low bas relief sculpture project investigated the translation of language into three-dimensional form through the interpretation of an action verb. Working with a randomly generated word, students were challenged to develop visual representations of movement, energy, and meaning using only achromatic materials on a 20" × 20" foamcore base.
The design process began with mind-mapping exercises that encouraged the exploration of associations, conceptual connections, and abstract interpretations of the assigned verb. Through sketching and thumbnail studies, students experimented with composition, form, and the use of both actual and implied textures to communicate action and dynamism. By limiting the palette to achromatic materials, the project emphasized the importance of form, contrast, texture, and spatial relationships as primary design tools.
