Heck's Collage
FOUN110 Design Thinking and Process | Sum 2026 | Prof. Navin Norling
This collage project challenged students to explore the elements and principles of design through a process of experimentation, composition, and iteration. Using only imagery sourced from Heck's Pictorial Archive of Nature and Science, students created original visual narratives by reconfiguring found material into new relationships and forms.
Collage elements were carefully selected, arranged, and adhered to 11" × 20" Bristol board using gel matte medium. Through multiple design iterations, the project emphasized the importance of balance, contrast, rhythm, scale, and unity while encouraging creative problem-solving. By testing different configurations and compositional strategies, students developed a deeper understanding of how visual elements interact to create cohesive and engaging designs. The final composition reflects a thoughtful exploration of organization, hierarchy, and visual communication.
