Linear Sculptures

FOUN240 Spatial Design and Fabrication | Fall 2026 | Prof. Sara Rastegarpouyani

This series of five abstract linear compositions investigated how fundamental design principles can be communicated through three-dimensional form using a limited material palette. Working exclusively with linear materials on 6" × 6" bases, students created individual sculptural studies that expressed the concepts of pattern, rhythm, movement, unity, and economy. The project began with analytical research of professional linear sculptures, enabling students to identify how design principles can be manifested through structure, materiality, and spatial relationships. This research informed an iterative design process that included sketching, spatial studies, and experimentation with multiple configurations prior to final construction. By working with limited materials and abstract forms, students developed a deeper understanding of how simple elements can generate complex visual effects and clear design intent. The project emphasized the importance of precision, craftsmanship, and critical decision-making while strengthening foundational skills in three-dimensional design.
