Clay Sculptires

FOUN240 Spatial Design and Fabrication | Fall 2026 | Prof. Sara Rastegarpouyani

This project explored texture as a key element of three-dimensional design. Students researched natural and manufactured surfaces through photography, drawing, and observation, using these studies to inform the creation of three non-objective sculptures: geometric, organic, and hybrid. Using wire armatures, aluminum foil, and polymer clay, students developed forms that emphasized proportion, movement, balance, and spatial relationships. Texture was applied through imprinting, carving, and additive techniques, transforming the surfaces and creating contrast, rhythm, and visual interest. The final sculptures were finished with acrylic paint to enhance texture, depth, and form. Through this process, students strengthened their understanding of material exploration, surface treatment, and three-dimensional composition.
