Reflective Object
FOUN111 Drawing and Sketching | Sum 2026 | Prof. Meg Aubrey
This observational drawing project focused on developing the skills necessary to accurately represent light, value, and surface quality through direct observation. Using graphite pencils on 7" × 17" paper, students created a detailed study of a reflective object, challenging them to capture the complex interaction of light across a highly polished surface.
The project emphasized careful observation and the ability to identify subtle changes in value, contrast, and edge quality. Students studied how highlights, reflections, and shadows shift across the object's form, developing a deeper understanding of how light defines shape and creates the illusion of volume. Through the gradual buildup of graphite, students refined their ability to render a broad range of values while maintaining accuracy and visual clarity.
