Graphite Still Life
FOUN111 Drawing and Sketching | Sum 2026 | Prof. Meg Aubrey
This observational still life drawing project explored the classical technique of chiaroscuro through the study of light, shadow, and form. Using a carefully arranged composition of at least five objects, including one reflective surface, students were challenged to observe and accurately represent the dramatic effects of directional lighting using graphite pencils.
The project emphasized the relationship between light and dark values to create the illusion of depth, volume, and spatial presence. Through close observation, students analyzed how light interacts with a variety of materials, paying particular attention to the complex reflections and highlights of the reflective object. Careful rendering of value gradations, cast shadows, and edge conditions enabled the creation of a cohesive composition.
